The current discourse about data, which is being mass accumulated, aggregated and processed around the world, inevitably raises the question of what is the extent to which all this powerful information transcends the core principle of human rights, thus further widening the gap of the ever-growing challenges with inequality. It is undeniable that most of the data is nowadays being managed and controlled by developed economies, within which powerful actors have been leveraging its potential as a saleable commodity in the world economy, mostly for private wealth, often to the detriment of the billions of people and communities worldwide. We are also seeing a massive data imbalance. Data is expensive and relatively hard to obtain, thus favouring big companies and organisations to invest in a large amount of data and infrastructure for greater data control. Indeed, not complying with the established rules and guidelines about data privacy is the root cause of why such colonisation of data is possible. The Catalyst 2030 community, among many other organisations and individuals working in the social economy, relies on mass information; For people and organisations working towards a SE, the SDGs, and sustainable development, collecting and analysing data enables us to generate deep insights we need to guide our initiatives and innovation toward, thus improving our overall resource efficiency. Hence, in the silos of large multilateral organisations and on the ground through NGO and Citizen sector organisations, the sector controls much of such meaningful data, which enables us to learn about the challenges and work with people, communities, and nations worldwide proactively and collaboratively addressing these. As such, we must enact upon shared principles of data ownership, privacy and control; if not, we might become marginalised by large players in the world economy and potentially lose control of all this invaluable information.

The complexity of the SDGs requires the prioritization of systems and project collaboration over silos. Government, business, social profits, and citizens working together are especially important at the community level to ensure global issues are localized. A significant challenge is that collaboration requires a neutral catalyst and a new planning approach driven by more than data and tasks. Planning for issues as complicated as the SDGs requires that in addition to being driven by data and tasks, planning must be driven by stakeholders and citizens. Local government is well positioned to serve as a catalyst for this crucial holistic approach to community collaboration by emphasizing stakeholder and citizen relationship building. This session will share a practice-informed framework, strategies, and examples of projects and systems collaboration resulting from local government serving as a catalyst for transformation.

The IATL Academy has created a comprehensive model for Youth Restorative Justice, including best practices and policies for schools, police, county and courts, and promotes sharing of best practices with its Fellows to create and enable change in their own communities. The initiative includes evaluation and reporting on restorative practices to establish their effectiveness and cost efficiency, the creation of educational materials and videos, and training for all participants. Three restorative justice initiatives, which have benefitted greatly from the active support of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, will be profiled in this workshop: Toronto-based Peacebuilders Canada’s Restorative Youth Circles and Restorative Schools Programs, the restorative programs of the Minnesota Legal Rights Center, and the multiple awards winner film ‘Once and Future Peace’.

“I agree with you. Now go and make me do it.”—Franklin Roosevelt (1943) to Civil Rights Leader, A.Philip Randolph. Winning elections and lawsuits are essential to achieving major social change. But social change history clearly proves that they are entirely insufficient without being coupled with a robust and growing nonviolent resistance movement, that essential element that is tragically still in its infancy today. Sustainability, mitigation and adaptation strategies are nice ideas for the long run. But we don’t have that long run anymore. So instead of creating tech for long-run solutions, isn’t it about time we create tech that can enable nonviolent resistance campaigns to recruit the massive numbers they need to make policy makers “do it,” and do it NOW!? Movement theory and social change history make it clear that mass nonviolent resistance is now our LAST and best hope to save what is still savable. And tech that can solve the “numbers” challenge, that can catalyze moral courage at scale, would arguably be one of the highest best uses of tech ever. This session will look at one or two such tools, but first brainstorm your own suggestions, plus explain how to get a grant if your campaign is eager to beta test one of these tools and is one of the first two qualified campaigns to apply.

With live introductions and Q & A opportunities, this session will showcase the Webinar presented by the California Elder Justice Coalition about the Waterloo Restorative Justice Elder Abuse Project conceived and delivered by Arlene Groh, Executive Director. Developed over two decades ago, the Project remains one of the few programs of its kind globally serving older adults who have suffered abuse by care-givers, relatives and others. This session will show a video depicting how the Waterloo program used a Peacebuilding Circle to reduce the harm to family relationships following a case of financial elder abuse. The video’s producer and circle co-facilitators will discuss the benefits and challenges of applying restorative justice to elder abuse, potential applications and settings in which it can be used, and steps for implementing programs.
