With the largest youth population in history, there is an unprecedented opportunity for young people to take an active role in shaping the future. This generation has inherited enormous global challenges but has the ability to confront the status quo and offer youth-led solutions for change. The Global Shapers Community is a network of inspiring young people under the age of 30 working together to address local, regional, and global challenges. How can the Catalyst community and the Global Shapers Community work together to support the next generation of social innovators and create a platform for intergenerational collaboration and learning?

Amidst increasing geo-political conflicts, a rise in religious fanatism, widening wealth gaps, and the realities of entrenched racism, we are subject to an underlying crisis that threatens social justice – fractured relationships and indifference to suffering. We may make progress on the SDGs, but without attention to personal relationships and a culture of encounter, any progress will be short-lived and inequitable. This session explores how we, as social innovators, might realise a Global WE through mass mobilisation toward a collective practice of humanity. This is an exploratory brainstorm; everyone is welcome.

It will also discuss the vulnerabilities of different communities including the abuse and violence they are subjected to. Finally, it will propose a collaborative response in the form a national campaign, with a clear call to action. Strengthening of existing alliance that Koshish initiated some time back will be a major take away from this session with collaborative organisations extending support for advocacy and awareness of the issue.

Although Canada was recently designated the 6th richest country in the world by McKenzie and Company, it stands 21st in its progress on achieving the SDGs. One of the biggest reasons for this lag has been the treatment of Canada’s minorities and Indigenous peoples who face some of the most enormous social challenges brought upon them by generations of colonial rule. Catalyst member and Canada Chapter Co-Chair Vilupti Corlis is focusing this panel on the role of the arts in moving forward through reconciliation into a better future and indigenous leaders who are accelerating change towards the SDG’s. The panel will convene three unique Canadian indigenous artists whose voices are expressing truth and inspiring change, and in the process driving Canada forward: Catalyst is a global movement of social change innovators: agents for change – social entrepreneurs, intermediaries, funders, NGOs and other social change innovators, collaborating in this urgent moment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The IATL Academy has created a comprehensive model for Youth Restorative Justice, including best practices and policies for schools, police, county and courts, and promotes sharing of best practices with its Fellows to create and enable change in their own communities. The initiative includes evaluation and reporting on restorative practices to establish their effectiveness and cost efficiency, the creation of educational materials and videos, and training for all participants. Three restorative justice initiatives, which have benefitted greatly from the active support of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers, will be profiled in this workshop: Toronto-based Peacebuilders Canada’s Restorative Youth Circles and Restorative Schools Programs, the restorative programs of the Minnesota Legal Rights Center, and the multiple awards winner film ‘Once and Future Peace’.

A dialogue with Prof John Volmink on the powerful philosophy and practice of Ubuntu Leadership, the spaces where it is manifesting, and its relevance to our current world circumstances. How the practice of Ubuntu Leadership is an embodiment of civic consciousness, and creates opportunities for the realisation of the fundamental essence of the Sustainable Development Goals. Ubuntu leadership offers the recognition that working together is intentional, developmental and requires patience, and that our own humanity can only be truly experienced within our shared humanity.
