Core to our humanity is problem solving and critical thinking. That is how we evolved and survived. This means that each human being is essentially a social entrepreneur, identifying challenges and developing solutions. Civilizations and cultures throughout history have depended on this spirit to enable change and progress. In this session we attempt to use this definition to reimagine social entrepreneurship in the context of the Islamic world. There are 1.7 billion Muslims globally. Muslims are ready to give to reduce poverty, hunger and improve education and health as part of their faith. One of the fundamental tenant of the Muslim faith is Zakat (to give to those in need). We want to reimagine this giving, Zakat, in today’s world in the spirit of social entrepreneurship. In this session we bring experts from across the globe in social entrepreneurship, Islamic religion, INGOs and government as well as private funders and foundations to discuss in depth this innovation approach, the challenges to make it a reality and concrete steps to implantation. The goal is to come up with a road map of actionable items to bring this concept to reality. The impact will enable systems change and drive achieving the SGDs in record time in a sustainable fashion because of the grassroots movement this concept will instigate.

Creating inclusive workplaces goes beyond the efforts of individual social entrepreneurs. The iCorp Model created by Dialogue in the Dark Foundation builds a consortium of collaborators who play different key roles in defining the future of work that embraces diversity and inclusion. These collaborators include strategic partners who support people with disabilities; funders who support capacity building of people with disabilities; human resources specialists of mainstream business employers; and iCorp Champions who are dominant business players. Participants who attend this session will learn about the processes and challenges in co-creating an ecosystem that defines a future of work in embracing diversity and inclusion.

Competition is part of the old system that must change to achieve the SDGs. However, as we shift the paradigm towards greater collaboration, there are few roadmaps to follow. We need practical tools, processes and examples to accelerate this change. Join this interactive session exploring barriers and opportunities to create greater collaboration within and beyond the development sector. Building on a case study of an innovative partnership between the entrepreneurship training organization Street Business School and global NGO BRAC, we will look at how partnership challenges were overcome and then crowd source your challenges and triumphs in creating authentic partnerships to build the roadmap. Walk away from this session with tools to create powerful collaborations that you can put into practice tomorrow to accelerate your – and others – progress towards the SDGs.

Unpaid family carers represent the largest source of care provision worldwide. Caregiving places a heavy burden on carers, impacting adversely on their health (physical and mental), finances and social inclusion. In low and middle income countries, carer burden is further exacerbated by poverty and gender inequality, plus a lack of state welfare systems. As we strive to achieve the SDGs, it is clear that without adequate consideration of the needs of family carers, we will not achieve sustainable change. In the session I will present the five-element Carers Worldwide model to holistically address the needs of carers and achieve long term change at individual, community and policy level. Participants will gain insights and practical advice on how to start the conversation about carer inclusion in their own spheres of influence.

This session is based on 2 years’ research, which has identified the efficiency opportunities from doing development differently: relieve hunger, reduce poverty and help build sustainable communities. The stories we have gathered demonstrate the multiplier in wellbeing from local people helping themselves. Sometimes called ‘localisation’, it seems that the development sector recognises this opportunity but is gridlocked and unable to make the change. The application of Good Management Practice [GMP] to development can overcome this impasse; what is needed is a new operating model and scale demonstration of its effectiveness. We will tell the stories, provide the new model vision of GMP for the sector and promote collaboration to ‘just do it’!
